During my externship I have been able to gain a new appreciation for nature. Before visiting Hawaii I would spend most of my time inside although, since most of Hawaii's greatest sites are outdoors most of the time spent there was outside allowing myself to really get involved with nature. We visited multiple beaches and my friends and family can vouch that I've never truly been a fan of beaches, spending lots of time there while in Hawaii as given me a much more positive experience with them (especially how much nicer they were there than beaches are in San Diego). I believe that visiting Hawaii has gotten me to have an urge to go exploring.
Going to Hawaii has me shown me that I now have lots of questions about the world. It has also has me wondering about the cool places I'll be able to go adventuring while I am up in Oregon. I have also fond myself wondering what living in a completely new and foreign place will be like, especially since I will be on my own. The trip was able to push me to becoming more independent and was able to give me a lot of responsibility which I will have to develop in the next coming year. I have decided to answer questions one and six.
For me I believe it was difficult to measure the level of success during this externship compared to me last internship because we didn't have a boss to us if we were doing the work or not. I feel that the only way to measure our amount of success was as a group, if we were all enjoying ourselves and were able to take something away from each of the days I would say we were successful. Myself specifically, I have taken a lot away from this trip, but not just academically but more on a personal and mentality wise. One thing I was able to learn about myself (and as a whole group) was that determination is an important factor in completing the goals you have set for yourself. This group has gone through so much and to be able to actually go through with our plans is honestly the biggest success of this externship. We were all able to work together and really push for this trip to happen, without the determination of all of us I don't believe it would have been happened. I think this Externship trip has been very eye opening for me. To be honest I am definitely not a very adventurous and outdoor-sy person, so embark on a journey like this has been very out of my comfort zone. Although, choosing to go on a trip like this has been very beneficial in getting myself to try new things. Relating to college I know I will also be placed outside of my comfort zone when I first arrive because of what a new environment it will be, so I feel as though this trip has helped prepare me for that. Not only this but the college I will be attending has a lot of very strong outdoor excursions that students are always recommended to take. Being able to get myself to appreciate nature and the outdoors has also been great preparation for me to look into the programs Lewis and Clark has to offer, especially in a place like Oregon I feel the nature there will be just as beautiful.
During this trip self advocacy has been very difficult to display in my opinion. I feel that this group has grown very tight knit and its hard to have any moments of personal helplessness or confusion because we are always together and on the same page. However if I am asked to write about a moment where I've had to show self advocacy I guess it would be when went Snuba diving.
When going Snuba Diving you are paired up with someone else to share a floating device raft and an oxygen tank and my partner was Bianca. At the beginning of the snuba voyage I began to get extremely nervous and scared about the new breathing arrangements and was only staying at the top of the water where I was comfortable. Until Bianca came up from under the water and asked if anything was wrong, when I told her I was pretty scared of this whole situation she was able to reassure me that everything was okay. I was able to trust her words and support and started to descend into the ocean only to find I was just panicking because I wasn't used to only breathing out my mouth. But as I started to adjust Snuba felt like a breeze and I was able to see incredible sea life at the bottom of the ocean. This is our first full day in Maui and so far it has been incredible, yesterday we had some time to spare before we were able to see our condo so we ended up just going to the beach, which was very different from the beaches back in San Diego. Here the water is extremely blue and clear (you can actually see the sand and shells below you) and the temperature of the water isn't freezing cold. For today we chose to hike Haleakala. Just driving up the volcano was insane because we drove through and above the clouds and when we got to the top the view was spectacular. At the top of the volcano there's an information center and an observatory. We then drove lower on the volcano so we could take some if its hiking trails and I think the most amazing part of the hike besides the view was the silence. You could just stand somewhere on the trail and you wouldn't be able to hear a noise, which is definitely an experience I couldn't be able to have in San Diego. I am so glad I chose to go on this trip so far, I think this externship will be an unforgettable adventure. The rest of the week seems completely packed full of activities to keep us busy. So far it seems to overwhelming to find any time to get a peaceful place to draw, so I think my past blog post prediction of taking pictures in Maui and drawing those back in San Diego will have to be correct. The only question I have about my externship is wondering if I'm going to have enough free time over in Hawaii to be able to work on my Zine while I am there. I am wondering if maybe I should just take pictures while I am there and then illustrate them on the four days I am back in San Diego. I think for the second day when we cooked at Coopers house, Dr.Dons cooking immersion week was a big inspiration to get us wanting to make food. I think the funniest moment during that day was when everyone in the kitchen was cooking but a lot of things were just going very wrong and then we all realized no one really knows how to cook in our group which made everything okay because no ones dish was super amazing. We have already had Dr.don visit us Tuesday because he will not be able to in the next week while we are abroad. I commented on Jason Javier's Blog and Myrnas Pulidos (although, I accidentally sent feedback on Myrna's cause I couldn't find a comment section, but she did still receive my comment but it is just not public).
